Use a file to ignore / exclude files or folder
Add functionality similar to a gitIgnore file or nomedia files. Allow a user to add a .ignore file to exclude local files or folders from being synced.
Example: I have NodeJS projects on my OneDrive but get sync errors because the file path is too long. The long paths are primarily extra modules that do not need to be synced. It would be nice to be able to exclude certain folders or files.
Hi, for this scenario we’d recommend putting the files outside of the OneDrive folder. The design is that all files in the OneDrive folder will be sync’d and files outside the folder will not be sync’d.
btw: there is another (much higher voted) suggestion on same topic in https://onedrive.uservoice.com/forums/913522-onedrive-on-windows/suggestions/18449926-reassess-the-possibility-to-ignore-or-exclude-sele ....
hard to disagree with the sentiments of prior posts, e.g., Brett's from a week ago ...

The changes made to OneDrive in the intervening years, specifically the syncing of the Desktop and Documents folders, have rendered yours and Microsoft's response to this TOTALLY MORONIC. Moreso than originally.
Various software uses the Documents folder for storage, which can quickly eat through OneDrive space, in addition to the issues ALREADY EXTANT.
The service is willfully made useless with this type of response!
6 years later, still this is not fixed

Judging by the fact that it's been more than 5 years and this problem still exists, I doubt anyone from Microsoft is going to pay attention, but...
I agree with others. I recently ran into this 'bug.' I created a few virtual machines with Vmware and could not exclude them from being synchronized to the cloud.
The same goes for all the software projects that reside under the Documents\Visual Studio 2019\Projects directory - I want them synchronized, but JUST the code, not the 700 MB of NuGet and Node packages it references.
Being able to exclude files or folders is an essential feature that is needed really badly in many scenarios. Please reconsider adding it ASAP.
fuuuuuuuuu. There are programs that create a whole directory tree of folders. One of those directories are huge log files that are constantly updated. Those I want to ignore. The others I want synced.
"The design is that all files in the OneDrive folder will be sync’d and files outside the folder will not be sync’d."
Then, to be frank, THE DESIGN IS SHORT-SIGHTED AND DUMB!! As a software developer I can tell you that being so deliberatly uncaring about user-friendliness, especially about something that common sense should demand, is only possible when working for a company who bundles applications that you don't want along with an application that you basically have to have.
The lack of flexibility by MS management is making me consider switching to Linux. This is just ridiculous.

This guy is my hero...lol.
it's almost 2021....
Using a folder outside OneDrive is unacceptable when OneDrive is meant to be used for the Documents Folder, which is used by many programs to store lots of data.
So you are releasing this for Windows after nearly 5 years..when are you going to release it for OXS another 5 years!!
5 years later
1. There are programs that creates file inside documents folder, and folder cannot be changed.
2. onedrive upload speed sucks
3. while syncing, program freezes, so I have to manually delete files to run program
4. either make onedrive server fast, or add ignore folder function. if not, I have to disable onedrive syncing because of single folder. thanks.

Please add this. It does not have to be in the UI. It can just be a text file just like the .gitignore. But please add this.

I second this feature. We use folder redirection of documents and such to one drive and some programs put files in there (like outlook add-in stuff) and when outlook is open it cause issues with files sync and throws an error. It would be nice to be able to keep file in the onedrive folder can be excluded but still remain IN the correct file location for reference. It is too much of a pain to modify registry and etc to make sure the program that uses it knows where it is and this can lead to errors. PLEASE IMPLIMENT THIS FEATURE.

Why can't vote?????
NOT RIGHT NOW .. haa..
First Allow users to vote this topic.
Second, Microsoft sales team should educate clients that OneDrive is not all employees especially developers, but only for certain business team and for executives.
There are bunch of other competitors which can support exclude files/folders better way, not sure why clients should go with OneDrive and with MS..

It's fresh and clever idea.
Just do it your work properly.

just do it, I would like not to use it, but the company makes me use it(((.
