  1. Add a dark theme to the mobile apps to save battery life and reduce eye strain

A dark theme can reduce battery life on AMOLED screens and reduce eye strain when using the phone at night in a dark envoronment

This is an interesting idea, but not something we are going to consider in the near future. In the interest of being honest, we are declining things that aren’t on our roadmap.

  2. Bring back the ability to Show Ribbon in new Onedrive layout

The new release of Onedrive has taken the Show Ribbon option, which allows for opening in IE. We need that back.

Thanks for the suggestion. We made a decision to simplify the user experience based on user feedback and want to be transparent that we’re not planning to bring the ribbon UX back to OneDrive.

  3. Allow installation on case-sensitive file systems, especially on Case-sensitive Journaled HFS+

It should be possible to use any valid MacOS drive to store OneDrive synchronization folder. I know, this may cause issues with distinguishing files and folders having equal names regardless chars' cases. But it may be solved by application settings (e.g., if a new file or folder having a name different in symbol cases is created, then it may be not synchronized and shown in special 'attention required' list; and then user can decide, whether he/she would like to merge these folders, delete or rename). Users may accept some compromises to make coming from Windows case-insensitive files system background, but…

Thanks for the suggestion. Just being transparent that we’re unlikely to get to this in the near future.

  4. Allow users to select any custom folder without /onedrive/ in path

I would love to see the option of being able to point the OneDrive desktop application to any folder I choose WITHOUT it adding the /onedrive/ folder to the path.

Ie: If I set onedrive to C:/PersonalFiles/, it will automatically create C:/PersonalFiles/OneDrive/. This forces me to put everything I want to backup in that folder. So instead of OneDrive working with me in the way I want to use it, it annoys me with another subfolder I dont want.

This is also a problem when combining onedrive with other applications where I might not have the option of redirecting that…

Thanks for the suggestion. Just being transparent that we aren’t likely to get to this in the near future. We do support changing the root location of your OneDrive if that helps.

  5. Remove sync app 5000 file limit for Sharepoint libraries

5k files is a very small number for a Sharepoint library if you are using it for your company shared folder, it is annoying having to setup multiple libraries and then configuring the sync app on every workstation for these multiple libraries (then hoping none of these go over 5k files). I thought it was a mistake when I first found out about this limitation.

  6. Remove 20,000 files limit for normal onedrive as well

file and folder limit of onedrive should be expand dramatically or completly removed, so one can use it to backup things large in volume not size. Like Photos libraries where I have already 20+ thousand photos so I canot back them up there

Hey, it sounds like you’ve hit a bug — OneDrive doesn’t have a limit on the number of photos you can store. If you’re seeing this limit, can you submit a problem report through the website and we’ll take a look?

  7. Remove the need for Office Upload Center if you are using OneDrive

As an O365 Home subscriber, I use my unlimited OneDrive storage to store my files. These include my pictures, videos, music and documents. On my Surface Pro 3, I have O365 Home installed which also includes the Office Upload Center.

To me, it seems redundant to have the OneDrive Sync functionality AND the O365 Upload Center available. In fact, the Upload Center stores an additional copy of my office files (under AppData) even when those files are stored within my OneDrive directory (and locally available). This seems like a waist of storage space (11 GB in my case) and periodically…

The Office integration support in OneDrive connects your document to the OneDrive service, allowing for you to automatically co-author when opening files locally, share from the backstage, and more.

You can choose to turn this off. On Windows 8.1, you must uninstall the Microsoft OneDrive app from the Add/Remove Programs. On Windows 7 or 10, you can right-click on the systray icon, access the Settings menu and uncheck the Office integration checkbox. This will prevent the Office Upload Center from being involved in your uploads.

  8. Automatically upload Xbox Game DVR clips to OneDrive

Have better integration with Xbox One. Allow videos to auto upload and provide 1TB of free storage with Xbox Live Gold Subscription to hold said video. That would allow us to edit videos with Windows-based video editors.

  9. Remove the hamburger menu and return to pivots

Please remove the hamburger menu from the Windows Phone app, and use the app bar at bottom and pivots at top.

Both Android and iOS are moving away from the hamburger menu in their latest designs, because it's bad interface design.

Thanks for the feedback. We’ve seen the discussions around the merit of hamburger or not. For now we’re going to continue with this design pattern on Windows.

  10. Allow online-only file support for Mac OS X Finder

Possible to see all files on OneDrive, but they are not synchronize until they are moved out from the one drive folder or opened.

This will make it easier to use the space on OneDrive without filling the SSD.

Hi, thanks for the suggestion – for this we’d recommend using Selective Sync.

  11. Enable mapping online folders to different local drives

Now that OneDrive supports very large storage it would be nice to be able to map different online folders to distinct local paths in the Windows/Mac clients.

  12. Loosen up on content allowed on OneDrive -- current policy would ban most users

After hearing about users who had their entire Microsoft accounts frozen without warning and without being allowed to retrieve their data, apparently over files that they'd uploaded (privately) to their OneDrive, I looked into the Code of Conduct again and was baffled by how broad the restrictions are. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows-live/code-of-conduct

Taken broadly (which Microsoft apparently is doing, based on previous suspensions) this would prohibit storing TONS of harmless, legal, common content. Given that Office 365 users receive 1TB/unlimited OneDrive storage, presumably we're encouraged to use it as a backup service and transfer much of our hard drive there. I would very…

You referenced an old page. OneDrive is covered by the new Microsoft Services Agreement – https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/servicesagreement

    3. Code of Conduct.
    a. By agreeing to these Terms, you’re agreeing that, when using the Services, you will follow these rules:
    i. Don’t do anything illegal.
ii. Don’t engage in any activity that exploits, harms, or threatens to harm children.
iii. Don’t send spam. Spam is unwanted or unsolicited bulk email, postings, contact requests, SMS (text messages), or instant messages.
iv. Don’t publicly display or use the Services to share inappropriate Content or material (involving, for example, nudity, bestiality, pornography, graphic violence, or criminal activity).
    v. Don’t engage in activity that is false or misleading (e.g., asking for money under false pretenses, impersonating someone else, manipulating the Services to increase play count, or affect rankings, ratings, or comments).
vi. Don’t circumvent any restrictions on access to or availability of the Services.
    vii. Don’t…

  13. Make it possible to ignore build artifacts

When using OneDrive as a location development projects (e.g. Visual Studio Projects, nodejs, ...) the folder contains a lot of build artifacts which shouldn't be uploaded to OneDrive. Those files can't be put outside of the OneDrive folder because the development tools expect them to be there. This causes unnecessary load and other problems (e.g. long file paths) for the local machine and the OneDrive service.

OneDrive should be configurable at the folder level to include/exclude certain files. Configuration could be done in a '.onedrive' file for example and work recursively in the folder tree (like gitignore).

    The .onedrive file…

We like the suggestion and the approach with the .onedrive file. But we want to be transparent that we aren’t likely to get to this in the near future.

  14. Sync scheduler

Add a scheduler for downloads/uploads. It would be nice if we could keep for example a computer running but configure that the synchronization should only happen between a specific timeframe (e.g. between midnight and 8AM). The reasoning behind this is that a lot of internet providers with a fair use policy and when you download/upload large quantities of data during off-peak hours they only count for 50% or even 20%, so every 1MB that you download/upload only counts for 0.5MB or even 0.2MB.

Thanks for the suggestion. If you’re trying to optimize for “initial sync” when deploying to your company, we have a group policy for throttling to help minimize impact on your network. We also have a pause feature that an end user can take advantage of.

Once you’re fully up in running, we need to make sure we always deliver on the promise of sync which is that your changes will be reflected everywhere. This is critical to avoid painful conflicts and confusion about why updates aren’t reflected in documents.

We don’t have the ability to take time of day into consideration on throttling yet, but that could be a really interesting feature that helps you manage this.

  15. Allow sorting of photos within Albums

I like the various sort order options within OneDrive folders (name, date modified, date created, size, custom). At the time of their introduction (Jan 2015), OneDrive albums do not seem to have these options. Please add them.

I would say the ability to create custom sort orders is particularly important for photo albums (even more than for folders).

  16. OneDrive Photos to include photos from Facebook and other services

The OneDrive virtual photo bucket is great and has great potential to exploit in the Windows 10 Photos app.

It would be majestic if this virtual photo bucket would virtually include the user's photos on Facebook, Instagram, Microsoft Photosynth, Twitter, Flickr, Google+ and so on. For fast browsing, local thumbnails are needed. This will make the user's life story more complete and provides more sources for photos to include in Albums for sharing.

  17. Selective Sync + Smart File Hybrid

Both placeholder files & selective sync both have their pros and cons. Please think about taking the pros from both and creating an innovative hybrid (Pros & Cons section below).

    ======== Hybrid Explaination ========

The 2 parts of this hybrid feature:
    (1) Selective sync selects the folders to appear.
    (2) Allow these files/folders from (1) to be right-clicked & kept online, so they can be treated as placeholders.

    The result:
1] For folders that are non important for one desktop/laptop, we can leave them out entirely.
2] For the important folders with large files (projects, videos, ISOs), we can see…

Hi folks – Appreciate the thinking and write-up. We’ve spent some time thinking about this and it’s unlikely to be our approach. That’s partly because it really compromises both sides – one of the reasons people like selective sync is the simplicity of what it means. And on the other side, placeholders allowed you to see everything without having to decide on syncing.

    Keep the ideas coming!

  18. Client side encryption in OneDrive, via existing NTFS encryption

NTFS should be extended with an API to access files and folders in encrypted format (it already has API for the decrypted format, since decryption is automatic and transparent).

Then OneDrive could use the NTFS-encrypted raw format to upload data to cloud. This would enable client side encryption with very little investment from Microsoft with huge business advantages:
    - support for client side encryption, transparently, on FS level
    - support for upload changes only, since only the changed files are uploaded, i.e. no need for containers just to encrypt files
    - very little investment is needed

    Encryption should be based…

Hi, we treat the OneDRive folder like a folder on your file system – so there isn’t a way for us to separately put a password on that folder.
