Bring back placeholder capabilities in Windows 10
File pointers and selective downloads / syncing was single best feature in desktop version of OneDrive. In new build it's gone. Current solution is terrible for tablets and SSD devices with smaller disk space.
If you find the previous solution confusing (as you described it in a blog post about new build), make the file pointers semi-transparent or grey in File Explorer.
Hi, I’d recommend we break this up so individual ideas can be tracked and voted up separately – below are some suggested titles:
Browse and open from OneDrive without having to sync all my files
Selectively sync individual files to bring offline
Search all my OneDrive files even if they’re not on my PC
Access all my photos in OneDrive offline without having to download the full res originals
Please bring placeholders back !!

Thanks for Your writing i found them interesting
I will add my voice here to bringing back something akin to pointers. OneDrive has become almost unusable for me because of the constant need to resync every time I change large files.
I have not even activated one drive and I no longer see place holder images. Makes it real tough to find my pic files. ANyone have a solution for this?

Splitting up this request ensures that people won't find what they want MOST in OneDrive — bring back the placeholder folders!

Please bring place holders back it made it possible for me to go to a ssd laptop with all the benefits that brings with it. And I do the decent thing and upgrade from 8.1 to 10 and find its gone what a let down and now I have a real problem with memory. Come on Microsoft this is just the way to loose people like me to Apple.
please bring it back. it makes no sense to have a cloud drive that needs to bes synched completely with the local harddrive...
How to overcome the placeholder limitation of OneDrive in Windows 10

A Tablet like surface have not 1 TB volume for store files, as possible in One Drive with Office 365.
The placeholders are the only way to use a big volume of datas in OneDrive with small space tablets, but with this technology I can take what I need and all the another stuff is only marked.
Please bring us back this helpfull possibility.

just bring back the placeholder files option back, thats it! so many of us (thousands) would be happier and less complaining about it ¿why? Because it made working with onedrive easier, so, if it was helping us user, why would you change it?
Why did you closed the web page of windows.uservoice in which thousands of users complained about this fatal change in onedrive

The storage solution where files are stored online only, but still visible as files in Explorer is a must with expensive and small SSD disks. With windows 10, there is no easy or good way for this with OneDrive (in Explorer, which we all love). Please prioritize this work!
Not a fan of how they removed the startscreen in Windows 10 (and no you can not get it back, as full screen start menu is not at all like Windows 8.1 start screen) the One big thing keeping me from upgrading to Windows 10 is the lack of a proper OneDrive function .. aka it is useless compared to how great it worked in Winows 8.1 with placeholders.
There is no ned to split anything up... just bring back placeholders exactly as they where in Windows 8.1
This is making me hate my Surface Pro and hate W10. Why can my apple devices use onedrive without syncing all files. Yet when I want to do it on my Surface Pro 3 I need to download the files, which will kill my data limit for the next 2 months plus wont all fit on the 256gb hardrive anyway.
please do something about it
Please bring placeholders back. I was prepared to switch my entire company to surface pro, and windows 10. But since everyone it tied to our large shared onedrive folders we can't house everything on a windows 10 device. Staying on 8.1 with placeholders until this is fixed.
MS - couldn't get the 'vote' button to work on this posting, so here's another vote for bringing back placeholders in W10. (Actually, my solution is going to be rolling back to W8.1 for both placeholders & mail aliases. )
Agree, can't believe they took away the one thing that separated them and made them better from all the rest of these Cloud Drives.
I knew there was a reason I was putting off upgrading to 10. Seriously, the one feature that I've relied on for the past several years is gone? These aren't separate requests, they're singular. Sigh.
There's no need to split this up. Smart files only make sense if there is selective sync and integration with File Explorer. Bring them back, please.
