Enable long file paths (aka "File Name Too Long" problem when syncing)
As a developer, I have deeply nested file structures with sometimes arduously long file names. I am unable to use OneDrive as it stands now because of this. I would like to suggest that this limitation be removed. I understand that it's probably a fundamental infrastructure issue but it's severely hampering Onedrive when compared to other competitors out there right now, despite all the other cool features.
We’ve enabled significantly longer paths for your personal OneDrive in our latest Windows and Mac releases (available from http://onedrive.com/download). You should be able to use paths up to 430 characters from the root of your local OneDrive sync folder. Our telemetry tells us this covers the vast majority of customers who have hit max path issues in the past. Note that if you have over 90 characters in your local OneDrive path (that is, from drive letter to OneDrive\) you will see characters over 90 cut into the budget of 430 characters (93 character local path will mean 427 characters available for path in the OneDrive folder).
Your tool will solve nothing. Did you even read the suggestion / issue description and comments? The point is that you should not have to rename / reorganize your files. Anyone can do that without tools.
long path tool can be used to solve long path problem.
Now that I have unlimited storage I tried to put all my files up into OneDrive. However because of this issue I spent about a working day weeding out "too long" path names (with which Windows itself had no problem whatsoever)...
Guys, let's take the plunge into the 21st century already and remove this ridiculous limitation!
Wow, this could be a dealbreaker for me with OneDrive and what a ridiculous dealbreaker!! When was the last time I had to worry about character limits on filenames? What a huge disappointment.
This problem should be addressed, and fast, in a way that it doesn't arise again with the next generation of OSes.
Think future- and OS-proof here: Windows has a lot of character limitations that, at least, OS X doesn't, and OS X has a little Windows doesn't…
i ll switching out too. this is ridiculous.
there is not even an option to skip the long file or an easy way to fix the name.

This is totally frustrating, moreover this issue is also present in OneDrive for Business
I got the Office 365 package especially for the Onedrive cloud storage, very dissapointed to see that it doesn't work the way it should. I spent lots of time to figure out a workaround, without succes. Let's hope Microsoft will fix this soon.
I have many files from endnote program. Onedrive cannot continue sync once this problem is occured. I have to go back to google drive. I've never had this problem with google drive. I wasted my weekend to upload 100GB files on onedrive.
To compound madness of design with sheer idiocy of implementation.
It's able to upload up to 254 char.
But it can't download them later on.
Reason: The upload limit is on 254 char UTF-16. But once online for download it becomes 254 char in URL Encoded UTF-8.
And since the limit comes from a local text field in an access database, it won't be lifted anytime soon unless they scratch the existing caching code...
Some fool over there need to be fired for gross incompetence.
out of votes, but +1 to this! For both file names and folder paths, it should accept anything that Windows does.
+1 for this feature.
also, 2 duplicates of this, should be merged to this post:
Same here, signed up for Office 365 especially because of the 10TB of online storage.
But no way I'm gonna change all my whole folder structure and my file names. Same thing with the ?'s in File names.
If Dropbox and Google Drive can do this, Microsoft should be able to support longer folder names and special characters, too.
Gonna stay with Dropbox until this is fixed. Really disappointing.

My staff can't sync internationally and i am wasting hours and hour trying to change long name files. paying all this money for office 365 for staff and what for!! microsoft has really gone downhill and backwards. outlook and word apps takes so long to open it is ridiculous. why did they change such a good thing. so so disappointing.

yes i agree and the problem with the filenames is causing a lot of having with syncing and why does it add 20% to every part of the file name. very disappointed with one drive.

OneDrive for Business user here.
This is a ridiculous limitation if you're doing anything serious or have a large number of files. How do you expect people to use OneDrive in a work environment if you don't support deeply nested folder structures?
Google Drive, Dropbox do not have this problem.
Am I correct in understanding that this won't be fixed anytime soon?
With a 10TB (and growing) OneDrive I was planing on backing up and syncing a huge archive of files. The issue at hand is keeping me from doing so.
I approve of this suggestion.

This is an amazing problem for me too. The folder names I use are descriptive (not just "foo" but full names/dates of events) and then the file names are also somewhat descriptive. The total seems to have run into some limit in OneDrive that does not even seem to be a problem locally for my tools dealing with the files. If the local laptop can handle the file names, I would expect that OneDrive would have no problem with it. But it does (and has prevented the syncing the folders involved)
