Allow folders to be shared/co-owned with access/sync the same for all co-owners
You can do this with competing consumer cloud storage systems. OneDrive should offer that functionality as well.
Users would be able to add shared folders to their own OneDrive, syncing the folders on their computer like any other OneDrive folders.
Hi all -
I’m excited to let you know that we’ve begun rolling out Shared Folder sync on OneDrive. We can’t wait for you to start using it!
How does it work? We have a new action on OneDrive, called “Add to my OneDrive.” Whenever you are using OneDrive on the web, or through the mobile app, you’ll see this when you are browsing content that others have shared with you. Clicking “Add to my OneDrive” will add that folder to your OneDrive. From then on, whenever you browse your OneDrive, you’ll be able to see any of the shared folders you’ve added. And on the sync client, when you select what folders to sync, you’ll see all the shared folders you’ve added. Select the shared folder(s) you want and they’ll immediately begin syncing to your PC or Mac.
We’re rolling this out which takes some time, and of course you may get it before your friend who also wants it (try not to rub it in). Shared Folder sync is available on Windows 10, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista and MacOS. Windows 8.1 users will need to upgrade to Windows 10 to get this feature. Note that you’ll only be able to sync shared folders where you have Editor permissions.
Let us know how Shared Folders work for you – and go sync those files!
Sharing is by far the toughest thing about OneDrive as it currently stands and is honestly the thing that keeps me from using it in a school setting: when the stigma is already a little negative towards Office Online, the difficult of sharing documents can be embarrassing. :( I'm very glad to hear that this is under way! :)
Thank you very, very much for the comment to let us know that this is in active development! Having this feature will honestly morph OneDrive greatly in my mind. Thank you much! I love being able to interact with the teams on this.

This is make or breake for me using the Product!

Very important feature! We need it for collaboration, and at the moment we work around this by leaving one computer logged on at all times and simply file-share the needed folder across the local network. Just thought I'd share this here, maybe it's a workable solution for some of you out there as well.

Also very important to us here! Otherwise, will need to go back to dropbox...

Perhaps we will see this in time to reorganize and migrate from other services during the holiday shutdown.
This is soooo important to us, too. Hope this is implemented really soon, otherwise it's back to Dropbox...

I didn't expect that such a basic feature could be absent. Well, bye bye onedrive. Who knows. Maybe I'll come back once you guys fix this. Soo disappointing.

Yes, this is a crucial feature and it can't come fast enough!
Any update on this Omar?
Ummm the world leading cloud storage providers offer this feature... PLEASE DONT give us a BETA product and try and sell it to us a full release product EVER AGAIN. This has cost me a very lucrative contract, lost to DROPBOX and has tarnished my companies reputation. If you dont offer the FULL features of the market leaders its a BETA product. Thank you! #VerryDissapointedInMICROSOFTyetAgain
this is a must-have feature! Please hurry up ;)
Dear Omar Shahine,
well now Christmas is coming very soon, do You think we can have the desired OneDrive functionality as a Christmas present in 2014? (2012, 2013 and 2014 we were disappointed)
MS 5 years behind everyone else lol

Thanks for the progress report. This feature is really critical. This was requested strongly by users over two years ago and Microsoft said then they understood how important it is.
Why are we still waiting when a comparatively tiny company like Dropbox have had this feature for years. Do they have more talented developers or better focussed managers or less internal politics. I do wonder...
The lack of such feature is what's keeping my company from using OneDrive. Unfortunately we have discovered it only after start using and could hardly believe such basic functionality was missing from a Business cloud storage solution.
As soon OneDrive has it implemented we shall look for it again. Until there, Dropbox all the way.

I'm so glad to hear that it is a priority.

This is a really great idea. Dropbox has been using this idea for ages, when a folder is shared wih you and you accept it it adds to your Dropbox as if it is one of your own folders and everything everyone does with that folder syncs. I use two different accounts, one for personal and one for work and and more people are starting to need access to our work files i cant just have them sitting in my personal onedrive anymore and i would prefer to use OneDrive rather than have OneDrive sitting there doing nothing and have to use Dropbox so that we can sync the work files and everyone can access them properly

I too consider this base functionality. Taking the history of many years with file sync (mesh), it is surprising that it is still not there.
Thanks Omar for your Information! Ok we do not know now a timeframe, so we will wait. But when you say it is a top priority ! then MS fellows will establish the solution in a Flash!!
Please make the solution SIMPLE SIMPLE SIMPLE!
(Maybe 'just' somehow a mirror of OneDrives appearance in web)

i already expected that ;).
but the next thing we found out , that if you would have that folder trick.. that it would need to be prioritized also during the indexing fase , too to make it effective.
the thing is that the file change detection (filewatcher) is not really kicking in everytime.. so sometimes you have to do a total check on the whole onedrive to detect changes , so that it can be uploaded.
we thought about two methods to work around that :
- just a simple recursive priority on the shared folders while indexing,
- or a context menu item that tells to sync this file/folder directly with "a copy to" dialog popping up as something people can see how the progress is going on.
all in all , i try to say , that its not enough to only get the sync going on, but direclty after that, that the priority of that sync matters most to make it truely worth using.
In my case :
- i am using remote working trough skype as videochat between holland and italy
- onedrive as the place we get files from.
- i already sync my pc's locally in the holland.
- we were thinking about using my onedrive on a pc locally in milano too..
- during syncs between different pc's here localy , that forced re-indexing takes a long time (sometimes a hour or two).
- even if we would make a pc in milano with the same synced onedrive as here locally. there would still be user-interaction needed (like re-indexing).
Also , on a 5 times daily basis, i must do a local check between every onedrive folder on our local network. Cause we need to be sure that all the folders are in sync before starting the projects on each computer. We use beyond compare for that, with some work arounds to find that onedrive folder on the network. If we don't do that , a project could not be ready to find all its files.(because the sync was not ready yet).
To do also do this remotely towards milano , would mean that we directly need a vpn and stuff.. You can imagine that that is a big step towards too much buttons and all to press to work easily.
So please make prioritizing file/folders or forced sync on file/folders part of this , to just make it a lot more easy.
