Shorten link by default
When I generate a link to share a file, I'd like this link to be automatically shortened.
OneDrive's URL format is ugly. When I paste it in some places, they are not fully parsed and converted to links (just a portion of the URL is converted). Or I want to tweet it.
I think every time I use the option to generate a link, I want to copy it and paste somewhere else.
In this case, the generated link could be shortened by default.
Hi, everyone. You should be seeing shorter links by default in the sharing dialog now. Please check it out and let us know what you think.

It's a good idea to make new UI but please include the short link service as it was before

Oh my God, MSFT, what are you doing to yourselves! How do we now get file access statistics?
Previously, one could shorten the shared link; copy and paste in the address bar; add a + sign at the end of the link like http://1drv.ms/abcdefg+

YES BRING BACK my old settings, ...I need the “shorten link” option back. I use the “shorten link” feature so that I can put the link into my transmittal letter (I work with formal correspondence so simply including a link in an email is not an option) when sharing documents with clients or other offices. I then copy the link and insert it into my letter so that the recipient can access the documents.
The lack of a “shorten link” feature means the recipient now has essentially a two line link that has to be typed for them to access the OneDrive. That is very inconvenient for both myself and the recipient. The longer link is also prone to more typographical errors – which serves no purpose other than to increase frustration in all parties.
Even including the longer link via a “copy and paste” into an email does not always work because the link is often too long for some email servers. It is broken into two parts over two lines and only the first line is an active link. Needless to say, that active link does not work.
There is no obvious reason why the “shorten link” option was removed. PLEASE BRING IT BACK ! ! !

'Shorten Link' is/was very useful. Long version of link causes problems.

This must be brought back asap!.
Has been removed without even a message why.
Even Microsoft (Netherland) wasn't aware of this en suggested I post my "problem" with the disappeared "shorten link" on the user community. -

Put back "shorten link". The extremely long URLs with oddball characters don't work in many email clients.

I can not understand why you have killed this feature. Mails with links are looking very bad now. :(

Couldn't agree more. I'm absolutely beside myself that this got taken out. Almost everything I do on my PC has become a "workaround" and it is becoming extremely irritating. I watch my friends use OSX and things like DropBox and they don't have any of these issues. Maybe being a MS fanboy hasn't been worth it.

They should absolutely bring this back, but a workaround is to copy the long link and paste it into bit.ly or bitly.com . You will then get the familiar 1drv.ms/xxxxx format. If it wasn't being used, it's because MS didn't flag it properly. How many people have found OneDrive unusable because the links "don't work" when sent by email to someone else? I've heard that from people, which is why they use DropBox. If OneDrive wants to increase its usage (maybe they don't??) then they need to make things like the Shorten Link feature more obvious, or even the default, rather than take it away!

Where the option of shortening the link? It was very useful for me to use the reduced links. You have any option to use the previous version of onedrive?

For Word and Excel files at least, you can still generate a short link by opening the file and taking the 'Share' button at the top right. Very time-consuming if you have a lot of files. I still don't see why they've taken it away from the right-click method though - it certainly hasn't enhanced the user experience.
