Use a file to ignore / exclude files or folder
Add functionality similar to a gitIgnore file or nomedia files. Allow a user to add a .ignore file to exclude local files or folders from being synced.
Example: I have NodeJS projects on my OneDrive but get sync errors because the file path is too long. The long paths are primarily extra modules that do not need to be synced. It would be nice to be able to exclude certain folders or files.
Hi, for this scenario we’d recommend putting the files outside of the OneDrive folder. The design is that all files in the OneDrive folder will be sync’d and files outside the folder will not be sync’d.

Why can't vote?????
NOT RIGHT NOW .. haa..
First Allow users to vote this topic.
Second, Microsoft sales team should educate clients that OneDrive is not all employees especially developers, but only for certain business team and for executives.
There are bunch of other competitors which can support exclude files/folders better way, not sure why clients should go with OneDrive and with MS..

Why can't I vote?
It's fresh and clever idea.
Just do it your work properly.

just do it, I would like not to use it, but the company makes me use it(((.
Microsoft products can't just work stable, they always crashes from time to time.
your design is stupid ... and you are incompetent for not recognise the necessity to make accommodations... it is infuriating to see how many incompetent ego driven idiots act as so called product managers in the software industry

a must to be added feature...

This really needs to be addressed, an exclude file equivalent to .gitignore would be invaluable. This would allow files to be put into one drive (e.g. Lightroom Catalogs) and files that are not necessary to sync be ignored (e.g. the previews). Additionally with the ability to now redirect the Documents folder applications tend to include temporary files that are not needed in the long run (e.g. IIS Logs when local debugging). I get the concern may be about users complaining that files are missing when not expected or that malware may exploit this but solutions could be made around this. For example require a toggle to be set to enable the feature. Or don't rely on an in filesystem ignore file, make it editable via the web portal.
However a .ignore file would be preferable.
2020 here.... still can't filter out files/folder :(
Amazingly arrogant to close this down for vot!. Each and every day OneDrive hangs because of locked files. As others comment: I want to have my projects available on OneDrive - it is very convenient - but I cannot control all temporary files.

I'll be considering OneDrive when this feature is implemented.
Probably bc the feature would allow people to take advantage of their free storage more.
I guess most here understand how things are, and yet there are many times where users have no control over some contents.
In my case, my company decides to direct some internal software files inside my "Documents", and there is nothing I can do about it. As a result, OneDrive keeps failing to sync some files, and the only alternative I have is not syncing the standard "Documents" folder, which is not really what I'd like to do.
Want to sync my User Folder without the AppData folder to be synced. This feautre should be simple to develop.

Is it really that hard to implement such a simple feature?? Wow!
it's just about incredible that this is not an option right now ... !!!
For the love of god, fix this. Rather than backing up what is essentially the core of my machine, which is far more than necessary, put a separate, singular, OneDrive parent directory which we can structure ourselves. Programs like Photoshop, Blender, Zbrush, etc. all establish databases within the document directory by default, and moving these is not always possible. I do not need every piece of scrap from the center of my machine being backed up, and chocking up bandwidth every 20 minutes. I need a small, clean folder that I can structure complete to my needs. Not a massive copy of my drive trying to upload every 10 freaking minutes. Please fix this.

This feature needs to be added. I have commercial software products for example that build a file cache in the documents folder (Magix Music Maker). Maybe they shouldn't be doing that but they do. Because of this it is constantly syncing large image files that are not needed to One Drive. We need to be able to manually say "don't sync this folder" to prevent problems like this. It should be so easy to implement this, I don't get how this isn't a thing!

Seriously? Why is such an elementary feature not supported?
Unfortunately other sync applications aren't much better - looking at you Amazon Photos - so I guess you can take solace in that.
I can't vote, but +1 please.

I also need this feature.

We can't do that. Please stop with the narrow attitude and provide people with what they need.
