OneDrive Files On-Demand
Allow an online sync only for OneDrive, like Windows 8.1 file explorer did.
Most of PC don't have enough storage to keep files on HDD.
That will really improve productivity !
I’m proud to announce that OneDrive Files On-Demand is now rolling out with the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (https://twitter.com/onedrive/status/920288442965164033). Whether you use a personal OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online, you can now browse all your files without filling up your disk and take advantage of the rich features of File Explorer. Read more about how you can start using OneDrive Files On-Demand & skip ahead if it hasn’t been rolled out to you yet (https://t.co/YFxsqB3JNb). Thanks to all of you for the emphatic support, and a special thanks to our incredible self-hosters in the Windows Insider Program!
Where is this feature at in the roadmap released today? I think we'd rather see placeholder than "differential sync".

Like many others, I have several devices I have not updated to Windows 10 yet, just due to the lack of Placeholder files in OneDrive. I have 10TB on OneDrive, and I really don't want that on every PC I own!
FYI I would have given this idea all 10 of my votes if that had been allowed. So add 7 more votes to this one for me.
Please add this function to the SharePoint Library sync too.
What is the point of 1TB cloud space and ability to sync groups files while there is no "sync online only" feature? Its useless.
I echo Nicholas' eloquent comment and repeat this link:
Sad part is that now it's clear to me that Microsoft is planning to charge premium price for this feature.

Echoing what many others have said, lacking this feature makes OneDrive nearly useless for lightweight computing platforms, like my 2-in-1 with a mere 125Gb SSD. For Microsoft to have just tossed out a critical feature like online-only availability of files speaks volumes of Microsoft's arrogance and the dirt-low value they hold for their customers.
The idea that this feature was removed with no Q/A bringing up the possibility of not having a hard drive large enough to hold the full OneDrive synced files is ridiculous. I'm not sure whether this is just severe incompetence or a disgusting indifference to product quality and customer satisfaction, but it's made me very seriously consider abandoning Microsoft altogether. This may be the last nail in the coffin for this once-loyal customer.

My hope this this would replace the super clunky mechanism that exists today to open a team site document library in Windows explorer...all my users just want to use Windows Explorer to navigate the team site, but don't want to deal with all the problems that come with offline sync.
256 GB Harddrive in my Surface, 1 TB of OneDrive Storage...
Whats the point of that? I can´t even use more that 1/4 of it!
Sounds like Marketing thought 1TB of cloud storage was a nice USP.
I work at one of the largest automotive manufacturers in the world and we have to fix issues if we get 30 customer complaints or more, not 24,318 votes and 1033 comments.

I have just about 90GB of medical course videos, ppt presentations, images and documents for studying on my OneDrive which I don't use unless i need to. Another 60GB of we being silly videos for memories which almost never used. I have these files on my OneDrive because I don't want it to eat away my hdd space as well as them to get deleted because of a worm or virüs or my hdd got bricked. And new OneDrive tells me I have to download it everytime my system formatted or resetted with a connection of 2.4Mbps with an 75Gb fair usage policy. Are you kidding me? Place holders were the best part of OneDrive and the reason why I don't go Dropbox, Google Drive or any other paid services. Get them back! I'm paying for them, on monthly basis. (as I have Office365 subscription) Another suprise was that I wasn't aware of w10 OneDrive not having placeholders an it just ate away the fair usage policy data cap. Just beautiful. Thanks a billion Microsoft!
I have a paid subscription to Outlook 365 Personal and multiple issues have made me very disappointed on the product.
Number 1: The ability to "Connect Accounts" in Outlook Web App was functioning in Outlook.com and with the upgrade to Outlook Mail, the function has been eliminated.
Number 2: OneDrive has "placeholders" on the desktop and now the entire file is present. Previously I was able to choose which files were on the desktop and sync ONLY those files to OneDrive. Now all my files are present on the desktop. This function of "placeholders" have been eliminated.
Number 3: In older versions (Office 2013), data validation worked well on both the desktop and Web App in EXCEL. Since the introduction of Office 2016, data validation is not available on the Office Web App, only the desktop.
Number 4: Having the ability to write rules in Outlook Mail is not working at all. It did work when it was Outlook.com
I am very surprised that all of these were functions that worked in previous versions of Office Desktop and Office Web App and now they have been removed. I am very, very disappointed and may have to evaluate switching my software to GOOGLE, and discontinue offering Office 365 to my customers. I would appreciate a reply someone doing something about this.
I have 1TB of online storage space that is now comletely useless to me. If you don't bring back online only folders, there is just no reason why I should continue to use this product.
Add this feature. I don't want to store in on my PC, that's the point of cloud storage. I am going to remove I guess and start moving things to google drive since it works perfectly with that!!!
Great! I cannot even get my files on the web now. the page doesn't load.
Thanks for storing my files in your closet and loosing the key Microsoft!
I beg u pardon but if I have to download all I need on my PC why the **** should I use a cloud storage!?
The level of **** in "Microsoft thinking" is reaching beyond the clouds!!!!
The removal of this feature prevented me from upgrading all 5 of my devices to Windows 10. Good job Jason Moore
What do you mean by Passionate? Is it like teenager passion where you just stare at it the whole day, but do not do anything about it?
