Improve the PDF annotation experience on iOS
-updated title -
The annotation / editing toolbar used to be blue, movable, and convenient. Now it looks like it came straight out of Windows 95 and has very limited functionality; e.g. you can no longer create two parallel pens and switch between them. Especially on the iPad Pro this is a huge loss and I don't see how this is a change for the better. Please bring the modern toolbar back!
We hear the feedback and working hard to address and improve our PDF annotation editing experience.
We’ve made several updates to the PDF experience the last 3 months. Including:
-Saving pen style preferences
-Apple Pencil usability updates
-Toolbar UI update
-Free text annotations
-Saving the position in a PDF
The team is continuing to work on improvements to our PDF annotation experience and are working on a UI refresh we plan to roll out in the coming months. I’m resolving this one for now, but if there are other specific requests in this area please open new suggestions.
Why have you taken this away? Use it to update templates I get from my accountant...now I have to hand write with iPad pencil. Please bring it back.
Usable? depends what you using it for. I would suggest that you read the comments below for an education on how many users have been disadvantaged by this update.
Nearly at 1000 votes, would appreciate another update please Ryan.. Everyone is being very patient
thanks for the reaction and the improvements. At least it is now usable again.
Yet, the Apple Pencil usability is still worse than the old blue one.
I don’t understand why they would remove the ability to add text to a pdf. I used to use this app everyday to make notes on lecture slides for university. It worked perfectly for 2 years. However, now I don’t know what to do. Should I use an app made by someone else?
With the old blue bar we were able to write with the keyboard over the pdf text, add cloud shapes, add arrows for pointing text, and the writing did not look like if I was writing with the mouse. This application lost so much functionality that is no longer a useful tool. I just don't know why Microsoft did something so wrong. Probably you guys want to release a separately paid markup tool. No other reason for this ackward change
I just tried Onedrive again to see if this was fixed. Obviously not. Still sticking with PDF Viewer. Thanks to previous comments for the suggestion.
Update made 17/11/2018 did nothing to solve the issues. The post made by Ryan does not match the output.
Noted, the pen usability has been improved (but is still much worse than it was prior to the abominable update), and nothing else has been fixed...
I think this app has two paths now: back to how it was, or down. There is no useful innovation anymore.
OP title should be bring back blue toolbar,
Since the latest update i have had endless problems.
BRING BACK THE OLD BLUE TOOLBAR PLEASE!!!
The new note feature is terrible and was much better the way it was. I use this App everyday. I also have encountered loss of information in my notes.
I feel the latest update is actually worse. Was much better the way it was.
BRING BACK THE OLD BLUE TOOLBAR!!
New toolbar is a HUGE downgrade! Removed so many editing features from the previous blue toolbar which I used everyday:
- Shapes; squares, rectangles, circles, arrows
- Text boxes
- Custom made boxes with dates, time, ticks, approved
- Text options were so much better; colours, font, size etc
- Toolbar was easier to use, move, more options, modern
Huge impact to all of our company users for onedrive & ipad, and needs urgent attention.
Just put it back the way it was, this new update is pathetic and useless to everyone it seems
Please please please let us use the general iPad system functions such as Define (or Look Up) and Speak!!!
I would really appreciate it if we could use the functions that we were able to use before. I love reading PDF files in OneDrive and I would like to continue doing it.
The update is objectively worse - it’s the equivalent of saying you’ve renovated the house... by taking out the plumbing, the front door, and all the furniture.
And now there are now just 4 walls...

The loss of the ability to add text to a PDF through the mark-up tools is a massive loss within our education setting. When we are actively promoting the use of OneDrive with our iPad users, this functionality is critical to their adoption and use in their classrooms. Please ensure this functionality is returned as a matter of urgency as the current crop of tools in the PDF mark-up suite has our users looking for other tools to fit the bill and this makes life more difficult for our teachers, students and support personnel.

Where has the blue editing tool bar gone?how do you add text now?
Please put it back the way it was!! Unless anyone can tell me otherwise where I’ve missed it, but the “add text” seems to have disappeared!! I cannot add text onto a pdf document now.
Improving a product does not usually mean removing features!!
Doesn't appear that the updates that Ryan is describing above is going to fix any of the issues users have listed below??
CAN YOU PLS CONFIRM REINSTATEMENT OF THE OLD TOOL BAR OR SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY??
Ease of use hasn’t improved in those updates...
Seems like a bit of a waste of time taking a tangent to get full functionality back, why can’t you just revert to previous (fully functional) versions?
Can we get a timeline for when the app will be back to fully functional?
