Use symbolic links to syncronize folders
To sync folders that are outside of OneDrive home folder should be nice to create a symbolic link/aliases for the desired folder.

It's 2020 and this still doesn't work. I need a way to sync at least the Desktop and the Documents folder.
At least put an official warning on the one drive site, until this is implemented. I wasted a week before discovering this.

Sem isso o onedrive torna-se inútil. Não tenho como manter duas cópias dos mesmos arquivos no meu Fileserver.

This is really needed. Either this or support choosing different drives for folders to be synced to. With huge storage amounts I don't want every folder to be going to the same drive. The worst part is this used to work fine and was taken away.

I'll second this. OneDrive is pretty much useless for me right now. Symbolic Links and Aliases have been part of the macOS for almost 20 years. Aliases had been part of the Mac Classic since System 7 (1991) and symbolic links part of *nix since the '80s.
The only thing that prevents OneDrive from being 100% useless is that it's needed to work-around the crippling of OneNote by excluding the use of local export
Second that. I used to use hard links, but the new High Sierra does not support htis anymore. No way I am moving all my files in the OneDrive folder, all my links would be broken. So basically currently I cannot use my premium OneDrive anymore...
