Allow OneDrive for Business folder to be renamed
The main OneDrive for Business folder cannot be renamed, apparently because the path for syncing would break.
This is limiting and becomes very confusing for employees when sharing files with colleagues, as SharePoint creates folders with the same name in the computers. People don't remember which is theirs and which is shared.
Thanks for the suggestion.

This should be a must! Windows File explorer doesn't allow 255 characters path and we spent 35 characters i this unavoidable folder!!! We will have huge problems soon
I have to agree with most here. The space in the business accounts (OneDrive - My Company) means I cannot use it with VBox Linux. That makes my business account an over glorified backup that is not useful.

I have a Queen's university onedrive account, but the ' in the name means that the path does not work in many applications that treat it as an end quote instead of part of the path name.
As mentionend earlier - we have a need to sync several accounts to some users. They all get almost same name except for (1), (2) etc. in the end of the name. It will be much easier to handle the correct OneDrive for Business if synced folder could be renamed.

Software that I rely on at work demands file paths with no spaces. The inflexibility of your naming convention means I cannot use OneDrive and must stick with Dropbox until you catch up with the competition. Too bad, I was looking to break from Dropbox...
This is a standard feature with your competitors (Google Drive & Dropbox). It's needed for a large variety of reasons. Please prioritize!
Please allow the renaming of the root folder, or at least during configuration on initial setup, as folder names with spaces are not supported in my software development IDE. I have had to move to OneDrive for all work based on individual laptops and now I can no longer debug my code.
The root "onedrive for business - <company name>" folder name is too long!
Is this still a problem as I cannot find the answer to solve the issue?
Thank you very much.
I would like this feature added . It would be a great way for troubleshooting sync problems renaming OneDrive-company folder to OneDrive-Company.old would be great . Or recreating the folder from Scratch .

Folder and File renaming was a standard feature in the DOS days ... what happened!!

The root "onedrive for business - <company name>" folder name is too long and then sometimes I get sync errors because of "Filename would be too long" !! Well duh, you started it with the root folder Mr Onedrive :/
The long company name causes my sync folders to be more than 260 character. The Windows 10 path limit is the real problem in converting to OD4B. We have 100 users. If the name is shortened, I will most likely need to visit every PC to change the sync folder. :(
I am looking for exactly this feature in OneDrive for Business for all of the reasons mentioned so far. I need to sync a couple of different accounts, and also need to sync a local copy of a document repository. Since I don't have direct control over the lengths of filenames and paths in the repo, I need to be able to limit the path of the OneDrive location to something very short, like c:\onedrive\.
Also, I also use command line text utilities in Bash (Ubuntu on Windows), so having spaces in the path is problematic.
Being stuck with a very long name with spaces and a comma, means about the only thing I can take advantage of OneDrive for is syncing OneNote and some other MS Office documents, but not much else.
I also struggle with this, as I cannot open subfolders in Fiji (but probably also in other software) because of the spaces in the root folder...
On the taskbar, close the OneDrive application.
regedit - search for all "OneDrive - <Company>" and change to the new name.
search into all files under C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive and replace all "OneDrive - <Company>" with the new name.
Based on Rick's comment on June 27, 2017, the resulting file structure was more manageable but required an administrator and requires the Company name to be manipulated to resolve the problem (poor design). My suggestion would be to create a different data point for the standard file folder structure to be used and unlink it from the name of the company listed in Organizational Profile of the site. With this additional data point, the company name could be listed in full but the file structure created by OneDrive Sync could be an acronym.
For example, our company name is INSYTE Consulting Group, LLC. The acronym I would use would be simply INSYTE. The OneDrive folder structure and resulting folder for SharePoint Sync would be simply OneDrive - INSYTE and INSYTE, respectively.

I also find this to be an odd restriction. My current workaround is to create a "directory junction" by running:
mklink /J "C:\onedrive" "C:\cloud\OneDrive - Company Name"

I have also run into problems using Visual Studio. I can't name anything c#. # is not permitted.
Visual Studio is Microsofts own product!
Again here Dropbox permitted me to do this easily.
I need to remove the spaces from the root folder name, as my program doesn't accept file paths with spaces in. The enforced spaces in the folder name "OneDrive - Company Name" renders OneDrive for Business useless to me.

I also like this idea for another reason.
Our company has multiple users that have, no only their OneDrive account sync, but an additional "general" OneDrive account (among others) - so multiple sync clients run and there's several entries in the left side browse view of explorer - but these entries all just say the tenant name (1) or tenant name (2).
Being able to rename these in order to properly KNOW which one is which would be highly beneficial.
