How can we improve the OneDrive experience on Windows?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.
  • You can remove your votes from an open idea you support.
  • To see ideas you have already voted on, select the "My feedback" filter and select "My open ideas".

  1. Prevent sleep until sync is done option

It would be nice to have an option to have OneDrive app prevent the computer to go to sleep until sync is done.

Typical situation is when you just added a large flie/folder to your computer and it will take time to upload. The computer is likely to go to sleep before sync is finished, and in consequence files are not online as fast as you might want. (and/or you can't just let your computer upload at night when bandwidth is not needed)

It would be nice to add an option to have OneDrive preventing computer to go to sleep…

  2. Sync overlay icons "ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers" limit

There is a limit of 15 overlay icons in windows 10. Installing dropbox or google drive causes problems with sync overlay icons not appearing in onedrive (or vice versa). Why not make developers use the existing, microsoft sync overlay icons, rather than bringing their own? The 15 sync icons in "ShellIconOverlayIdentifiers" would be sufficient if Microsoft required that any third party sync application such as dropbox or google drive used the same icons. After all, onedrive and dropbox both show exactly the same information in the icon overlays - synced, not synced, sync in progress and sync error.

  4. Roll out enterprise management (GPO etc) with OneDrive Files On Demand

With the new OneDrive Files On Demand feature (placeholder replacement) would it be possible (if it isn't already planned) to incorporate some enterprise controls- for example via Group Policy.

When deploying OneDrive to our environment I'd like to be able to set the defaults on a per-computer and possibly per-user basis. Being able to use item-level targeting would be ideal.

Examples of how these preferences could be used include the ability to set the default behaviour to "Online Only" files for most users (particularly useful for student computer labs in education environments), or turn on "Always Available" on personal computers…

  5. Move the OneDriveTemp folder

A hidden folder called 'OneDriveTemp' forces itself on the Root of the user's hard drive. Usually on (C:), but when OneDrive is moved to another drive manually the folder moves with it. Though always to the Root of the drive even if OneDrive's main folder is not.

This is really messy and seems utterly unnecessary. Why does OneDrive get this special attention rather than placing it in AppData/Local or ProgramData folders for example? Or simply inside OneDrive's main folder itself.

Worst of all, I spend a great deal of time keeping my data drive neat and organized. So you can…

  7. To enable folders from different hard drives.

If you have more than one hard drive in your system. I'd like to option to add that folder to the sync process instead of coping it over to the OneDrive folder. That way, every added file to that folder on separate hard drive will be synced.

  10. API for OneDrive for Business Sync Client

Please provide an API for the Sync Client of OneDrive for Business. We should have the possibility to programmatically automate the sync of a SharePoint library (for example, from an External Application which already takes offline some DB data we'd like to automatically take offline a related SharePoint Document Library). This for us is very, very crucial.

  12. Sync the "Shared With Me" folder from One Drive for Business to the desktop version

So users can access files shared with them in the desktop version of OneDrive for Business, not just the website.

  13. one-way sync

Imagine a user with a smallish Surface Pro (say, 32GB) and/or Windows Phone and another device with a lot of storage (say, 1 TB) . Over time, the user accumulates a lot of files, photos, documents, and music. All this data could be automatically uploaded (if desired) to OneDrive. But, if the user desires to clear away these files from their device, they should remain in OneDrive (online).

Imagine further, this user would like to (from all of their devices) save all of their documents to a single Documents folder (tree) and all of their photos to a single Photos…

  14. OneDrive CSP for MDM management

With SilentConfig coming (https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/OneDrive-Blog/Previews-for-Silent-Sync-Account-Configuration-and-Bandwidth/bc-p/120993#M252) we need the ability to configure clients through MDM (Intune). A OneDrive CSP would help us achieve this.

  15. Right clik sync now

It will be cool if you can force update of the file if there are a lot of thing to sync. Just right click on this file and push the button Sync now, for fast update of certain files, that you need right now.

  16. Allow OneDrive on a disk with the ExFAT file system

The restrictions on allowed file systems makes a Mac/PC dual boot virtually impossible.

Windows forces the use of the NTFS file system, which doesn't play nicely with OS X. It's possible to redirect the Mac app to use the NTFS file system, but it never actually syncs.

The only universally supported file system between both operating systems is ExFAT. Dropbox works wherever you place it. Please remove this restriction.

  17. Choose to Sync any folder from any location on my PC

Instead of forcing me to move files/folders into a master OneDrive folder, I should be able to choose to sync any folder from any location on my PC's storage.

  18. Office files OneDrive sync issues since latest update of Windows

Since the last Windows update, I have seen inconsistent OneDrive behavior with Office files:
    - Even though "Use Office 2016 to sync office files" is turned off, Office still tries to directly upload files to OneDrive when closing a file
    - Much frequent occurrences of the "You now have two copies of a file" when saving office files, which force to waste time in cleaning up the duplicated files.

For the first issue, I temporarily changed the "Use Office 2016 to sync office files" to on, then back to off. That seemed to have stopped the upload to OneDrive while…

  19. Don't force to reconfigure OneDrive every time it crashes

When OneDrive crashes it forces me to:
    1) Reboot (WHY???)
    2) sign in into my MS account while I am aready signed into it in Windows 10. I use it to log into my PC! Why sign in again?
    3) Chose where to store files. I already have 200 Gb of OneDrive files on my PC in non default location. How hard can it be to memorize it and don't force me to pick it again?

  20. Option for turn on/off transparent tile.

Some of us want transparent tile, but some prefer blue tile, including me. There should be an option to turn transparent tile on/off.
