Online-only support for Mac OS X
Hello! I really like the online-only feature that OneDrive has for Windows, and I'm sad that the same feature isn't available for Mac. The files I have are eating up space on my hard drive, and using selective sync doesn't cut it (the large size of my OneDrive is due to images and .PSD documents which I open in bulk for image editing, and are a hassle to download from the website every time I simply want to use them.)
I'd really appreciate it if this feature were implemented, since I'm running low on space! If not, I'm probably going to have to say good-bye to OneDrive and migrate my files to Dropbox, sadly.
This is now supported as of Jan 2019.
This is not supported. Whilst files do go "online only", OneDrive does not report them as not taking up space. This means that OneDrive now reports that it is taking up more space than would be physically possible on some macs. This means the Mac sees the scratch disks as full and makes file handling and using applications impossible.
Here is a year old thread that is still active with users and their Macs affected by this broken feature: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/one-drive-online-files-take-space-on-macbook/9d211188-bcd7-4afb-888a-9cdca6fb583b?page=2
OneDrive had the same problem last year when Apple updated their file storage format, but fixed it within a month. Google Drive the same. OneDrive is yet to fix this issue which is causing the many people on that thread and hundreds of others across MS forums and Reddit problems on their Macs.
Do not use this feature, it has caused the loss of files, unexpected crashes and apparently some unrecoverable OS situations too.
What's the status of the online only feature for mac? Im still not seeing this.
This feature is being rolled out atm.
I am trialling MS Office 365 for Mac and have also noticed that the feature to have files online only is not available. It means I won't be paying a subscription for this and will go to a competitor. Simple!

You can use Expandrive until they catch up.

Remove your votes and add them to that one!
Now that Dropbox has sorted out online-only support with both its Windows and Mac desktop applications, surely Microsoft shouldn't take long to play catch-up, before we all drift over to Dropbox....
I agree. The sync with your local drive is getting a bit old. For some files it's ok but for the majority of my files it's ok if they only exist in the cloud. It keeps the SSD cleaner and it also makes the synchronisation more reliable. So a combination of selective sync (for your files you need to have fast access to) and online-only would be super!
needed now! no use for a cloud that can't be used remotely but instead has to be downloaded for access! imns
Agreed. Need a OneDrive app for MacBook that works like OneDrive App in iPhone/iPad. With OneDrive for iPhone/iPad I can access all clouds files and local files and store nothing in the device if I do not want to.

Agreed, this is the exact feature that I'm looking for! Online-only is preferred for certain files I want to be able to easily access from my work and home machines without having to sync them offline with all of my computers.
How do we get this implemented on Macs in the same manner it works today on PCs?
