Fix issue with missing photo thumbnails in OneDrive web view
I've recently started utilizing OneDrive for photo backup from my Win 10 machine and after backing up a dozen or so at least one or two have missing thumbnails on the web view. I've got almost a terabyte of images I'd like to store, but this is a big problem and has been repeatedly reported on the support forums:
I've confirmed metadata information so I know that's not the issue as some support techs have stated.
Please resolve as this a major issue for having online viewing capabilities.
Please continue working with our support team to investigate these issues, so we can identify issues as they come up (settings cog on the web will get you to support).
Hi, I have been missing Thumbnails for .pdf, .xlsx, .docx. .pptx files on the One Drive folder in PC. It works fine on a web browser though. And I'm facing the same issue on my other PCs too. Please fix it soon.
Literally there is no solution that actually works! I need the preview to work and I´m gonna be forced to change to dropbox. I had the same issue on my last computer and now on my new one. Im done.

Switch to dropbox...
None of the preview images is showing in One Drive or on my pc. They worked fine until we copied them to One Drive
Same here. Time to do something, Microsoft!
I am having the exact same issue and Microsoft does not seem to be listening.
I had the same issue but seem to have resolved it by doing the following, (the below is easier if you can split the screen or have multiple monitors)
On your PC locate to the folder where images are stored and put this screen to one side of your monitor or a separate monitor.
Open Chrome (this is what i use to browse the web) and
Go to your Onedrive account and the open folder where you have the thumbnail issue. Move this window to the other side of your monitor or separate monitor. (on your monitors you should be able to see both PC folder and Onedrive web version files)
In your PC folder highlight, all the photos that have thumbnail issues and drag and drop over to you Onedrive online folder a message will pop up saying "there is a file with this name already" press replace as long as you know it is the same file.
This will then upload the file and in my case resolved the thumbnail issue.
Hope this helps.
Solution: click "return to classic onedrive" on the bottom left corner in the folder. Then go back to the current version. Now I see all thumbnails.
2020 still not working...seriously???
WTF, 2020 and still not working?!?!
i have the same problem. the uploaded photos in my mobile app are showing, but in the web view, many are missing and even if i refresh and logout/login the pictures are nowhere to be seen.

I am having the same issues. I have tried various methods described online, even thirdparty-apps for generating thumbnails, but none works.
Only downloading all archives works, but I have not space for all my photoes.
I'm having the same issue.
Almost all of my images are not showing on thumbnails.
They do show on other photo libraries but not on one drive.
Please resolve this issue.
I established that the built in app in Windows 10 'Windows Photos' may have been the issue when running installed alongside 'Windows Photo Viewer' which is not shipped with Windows 10 by default so this might only apply to Windows 7 which has been upgraded to Windows 10.
Windows photo viewer is my preferred choice as it is faster at loading than 'windows photos'
I removed 'windows photos' via escalated powershell command: get-appxpackage -allusers *Microsoft.Windows.Photos* | remove-appxpackage
and then right click on an image where there is no thumbnail showing, select 'open with' then 'choose another app' (photoshop in my case) let the photo open in photoshop (or another viewer) then close, then repeat this again but select 'windows photo viewer' - after doing this my thumbnails were all restored
We also tried this in 'default apps' in settings, but that didn't work - The above is the only way we could resolve this - I don't use 'Windows Photos' anyway so this is no great loss to me - Windows Photos can be reinstalled via Powershell if this doesn't work for you.
Hope this helps someone else!
Mine just fixed themselves! Hope they stay fixed.
I am experiencing this issue too. How very annoying. Is someone at OneDrive working to fix this does anyone know?
Well, i'm having this issue since two day now. And it's not the first time.
None of the solutions in all the comments worked fines.
Starting to think about cancelling my subscribtion and to go on another service from another (serious) company.
New images show only a generic broken picture icon in OneDrive online, and if I click on that,, OneDrive takes me back to my laptop folder.
This just started happening yesterday. Old images dropped into folders are fine. The new folder they just show icons with no thumbnail of preview
