Option for SharePoint Online doc libs to disable "Add shortcut to OneDrive"
If I disable "Offline Client Availability" on a SharePoint Online doc lib, I still see the option to "Add shortcut to OneDrive", however if I click on it, I get an error message saying that the administrator has disabled this functionality. But, I can still see the shortcut, and access the library in the OneDrive web interface. I would like a way to disable the option completely.
Thank you for all the feedback and discussion!
To disable “Add shortcut to OneDrive” within your organization, please use the following Powershell script:
Set-SPOTenant -DisableAddShortcutsToOneDrive $True
If you run into issues, please update your Powershell client and try again. Running this script will remove the option for end users to add new shortcuts. Existing shortcuts will not be removed by running this script and will continue to work. This command was never removed, we have no plans to remove this command for the foreseeable future and we’re sorry for any confusion. We are updating the text after running the command to remove the reference to our preview.
In reviewing the feedback, we saw a number of issues with the sync client & Add shortcut. To respond to a few of those issues:
1. We have other work planned to improve the experience when a user attempts to add a shortcut to content that is already synced via TeamSite sync.
2. To remove a shortcut in the sync client without impacting other users, you can right click on the shortcut and select “Remove shortcut” in the sync client or delete the shortcut itself. Deleting files within the shortcut will delete the content for everyone, and send it to the owner’s recycle bin.

This is a critical feature to incorporate. Many of my users running Windows 7 with the older OneDrive sync client chose to add a shortcut to a 60GB SharePoint library to their OneDrive's and their hard drives immediately collapsed (Windows 7 doesn't support "files on demand" like Windows 10 does, and 100% of their OneDrive storage gets synced locally, including what the shortcut is pointing at).
There's also something to be said about the security of allowing users to copy what is essentially the entire contents of a SharePoint library to their own OneDrive accounts.
I haven't found a way to disable this without affecting the perfectly reasonable "Sync" feature.
