Automatically shorten urls for publicly shared items from OneDrive for Business and SharePoint Online
Automatically shorten the urls for publicly shared items from SharePoint Online and OneDrive for Business, similar to what is available in OneDrive.
When the feature is complete the urls generated by Get a Link / Create Link should be shortened automatically (possibly using http://1dr.ms) and a similar feature should be introduced in Sharepoint Online document libraries.

We introduced shorter sharing links in OneDrive and SharePoint in 2018.

@Reuben Krippner : The fact that you have this in the consumer service should tell you that you have the know-how to enable this feature... It's a very useful feature and would really make life easier for people transitioning or evaluating cloud services.
The 'easy-to-use' features on the consumer end of things are what brings and retains the users - whether it be a large or small business. Please stop closing your ears when your customers are giving you some valuable feedback..
Here's a short story : Blackberry once ruled the roost in business telephony. All IT departments provided the feedback that iPhones were consumer devices and not meant for business telephone needs. That feedback resounded with folks at RIM (who went on with business as usual) and a few others.... A short blip of time later .. The End.

"Head of eLearning" hit the nail on the head! I'm an IT tech in business, and no one I show the OD4B too wants anything to do with it. But when they see the consumer model they are all over. Come on MS, OD4B doesn't even integrate with OD on iOS...are you serious!
Did anyone scan through the terms of service. Scary, while MS wants my email address so I can post to this forum, they state that it's not confidential. I'm forced to use a non business email account.

I am a Head of eLearning in a K12 school,. We have an institution OneDrive for Business (shall we just call it SharePoint?) setup and I use a personal One Drive 'Consumer' account. I have tried very hard to persuade teachers to embrace OD4B but there are no take ups whatsoever. A completely different case when you show the Consumer model. The difference in ease of use and resulting staff confidence is astonishing and this is not just limited to linking files. User interface, embedding files and file management are all so much better in the Consumer model.
Whilst we may not be considered a 'Business' we are professionals who use the software for both admin and teaching tasks. If there is a reluctance to change then why not develop a 'Consumer' model that can be applied to organisations likes schools?
Perhaps you could forward this request to Microsoft Education unit?

Guess they won't be adding this then. Just had to share something off the phone with a colleague and its a mouthful.

We share many times (every week) pictures an documents with external customers.
In OnDrive for private it is possible to create short URLs, so that we can use these URLs inside of any document like PowerPoint presentations. Can you build such a URL shortener in to OneDrive for Business?
Thanks Frank

As a OneDrive personal user I am surprised (and annoyed) that I can shorten a url in Personal but NOT in Business. What's preventing this feature from being added? A long url not only looks ridiculous but also breaks easily.

I wish I'd seen this one before it was declined. I have to use bit.ly to shorten our OneDrive for business URLs, not a huge deal, though I use it more in OD4B than the consumer version

Why has this been declined? People clearly want it

I agree so silly to have those long virtually unusable links.
