This is a comment from "A. User" on the answers.microsoft.com site.
I understand your concerns, but “bird” is indeed a system process on Mac which used to collaborate with iCloud Drive.
There is a man page for “bird” (Type “man bird” in Terminal), you can see that bird is one of the system daemons backing the Documents in the Cloud feature.
ImageCheck the details of the “bird” process in the Activity Monitor, you can see that the files it uses are all related to iCloud:

If this “bird” process is causing you trouble, you can choose to enable iCloud Drive in System Preferences > Apple ID, this will enable “bird” at the same time, but if you need to use iCloud Drive, you can contact Apple to solve your problem.

I encountered this today, too, when refreshing my system, reinstalling OneDrive, and reorganizing all of my cloud storage. I had not realized previously I was double-synching my OneDrive to iCloud because I had set up OneDrive in the "Documents' directory. I decided to go ahead and continue to do this because they are key files (and I have the storage space). Nonetheless, it's a rather weird message to see.

Hi, not sure if you have gotten an answer or not. But this is my understanding. Bird is the process for syncing to/from iCloud on MacOS. I have gotten that message today and panicked! It turned out that I see this because there is overlap between my iCloud backed up folders and those for OneDrive. Basically I back my OneDrive also to my iCloud. Thus, oneDrive sees the Bird process as an app that is downloading/uploading files.
If that is your case, you should be good. I am no security expert and thus I can not make a statement to that effect. But my interpretation is that all is good, no security breach, it is this double backing up on my side. -

last night a file, after working on a biz plan for the past 6 week, just completely disappeared from both One Drive and from my Mac. "bird is downloading..." also came up. I contacted Microsoft and they claimed it was a Mac problem. Tried to explain its their software thats the problem. The guy just disconnected without any explanation. I want my money back!

Its is obviously happening to quite a few people. I've emailed Microsoft but no one has gotten back to us. I also haven't been able to find any other threads on the net. Has anyone else found a thread?
