Build back in file check in / out on Onedrive For Business
On my previous version of Onedrive for Business, I could check files out and back in again to prevent the creation of multiple versions of the same file. I have been forced to install the most recent version and, after a long period and a lot of wasted time trying to work out why it won't work, I have at length been told by MS support that this feature is no longer available.
1) This renders this version useless to me and I will abandon ODFB in favour of another provider - probably ay extra cost, which I am not pleased about.
2) In the site admin., I can still enable / disable this feature. This is what created all the confusion and cost so much time.
May I strongly recommend:
a) If the feature is not available, or will not work, remove the check-in / check-out option from the admin section
b) You seriously consider developing a replacement for this very important feature.
As a footnote, I have just received excellent service from Hiren Bhanushali at MS support.
We are having the same issue. The previous Groove.exe version of Onedrive supported Check in and check out. We adopted our outside staffs access to the check in check out feature around this capability. As we are forced to upgrade to the new OneDrive client the check in check out for synced SharePoint files will not work. The files open in read only and then rather than a collaborative document we end up with multiple individual copies. The only way to access the files remotely is through the SharePoint website. The problem with that is that after checking out and editing the document, the file won't upload to the SharePoint site if the internet connection is lost. The areas we work in frequently lose the cellular data connection. The synced copy allows us to leave a laptop on and when the internet connection is restored the files in the cache will upload. Accessing through the SharePoint site opens us up to syncing and lost data issues.
To me a basic function of a library should be the check in check out feature. If this system in not supported in the new OneDrive client you should make the Groove.exe version available again. Once you fix the new OneDrive client let us know and we can switch to it.
I haven't received the invoice yet but, I am sure my IT Consultant will be charging me several thousand dollars to try and fix a problem that could not be fixed. Multiple Microsoft support personel tried to help us. Each one until the last, Nicole Norton had us repeat the same steps as the other support staff. After speaking with Nicole we understood we can't fix the problem on our end. Microsoft released a product that did not have the bugs worked out, my words not Nicole's.
I am a Microsoft fan. I only use Microsoft products because I believe Microsoft will be in the best position to make sure their products work with each other. This oversight is disappointing. It would be a nice gesture on Microsoft's part to offer a product discount to cover our IT cost. As a business owner I feel this is a fair request and one that I would grant if the roles where reversed. I would not think it fair to burden one of my customers with a bill to try and resolve a problem with my defective product.
