Wanted to provide an update here: this is something we’re planning on doing, but don’t have a timeframe to share yet

While we don’t have an update here for adding metadata tags to files, we are continuing to explore this as part of the future roadmap. We recently announced the ability to edit existing metadata from within Teams and will continue to invest in metadata scenarios.

Photo Tags, and searching of the tags, is now supported in OneDrive. See

This suggestion is for the ability to tag (and search) documents in general, and I support it. A supplementary suggestion from me is that Microsoft fix the existing tagging of photos in OneDrive.
OneDrive currently allows for tagging of photos - but it's broken. (1) the tags aren't searchable in OneDrive and (2) descriptive tags are separate from those stored in photo metadata - which breaks Microsoft's own rule that they coined back in 2006 that "the truth is in the file".
See http://gcoupe.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/onedrive-still-no-proper-support-for-tags/ for more details.
People Tags were supported in early versions of OneDrive - why have they been dropped?
I support the request to bring them back, but please also include support for the Metadata Working Group's standard for image regions in photos (http://www.metadataworkinggroup.com/specs/).
This standard has already been adopted by Google’s Picasa, Adobe’s Lightroom and Photo Supreme. The latter will even read in Microsoft People Tags and use them to add the MWG equivalents into the metadata, as well as add the IPTC Extension “Person in Image” tags…
