While we don’t have an update here for adding metadata tags to files, we are continuing to explore this as part of the future roadmap. We recently announced the ability to edit existing metadata from within Teams and will continue to invest in metadata scenarios.

I have noticed a problem (perhaps related to this) with tags when you use a non-English OneDrive interface. The new auto-tags (#People etc.) are translated to your UI language (e.g. #Personer), but trying to set any of these tags manually creates a separate tag folder, making it look like I had multiple #Personer tags.
Now, I tagging photos with the English tag (#People) will cause the photo to be indexed under the same #Personer folder as auto-tagged photos. However, looking at the photo itself, it will still say #People (not translated). This is a mess.

Wanted to provide an update here: this is something we’re planning on doing, but don’t have a timeframe to share yet

Right now I use the tagging features in OneDrive very little, because no metadata entered from the web interface is saved back to the files themselves. Everybody wouldn't want this, but I would love such an option.
Metadata that lives in any kind of "sidecar" storage (be it in the cloud) is bound to be disassociated with the file at one point. So, I would never spend any serious amount of time tagging in OneDrive as things work today.
