This is a huge issue. If OneDrive is how we have to sync Sharepoint, it needs to support the most basic of Sharepoint's features. Checkout functionality is core to using Sharepoint and controlling documents on Sharepoint.
Now all I can tell users is, you have to go through a clunky Sharepoint interface which is incapable of loading the view for all the folders at once, open online, then select open in Excel or Word. This adds minutes of time to open every file for every user for no conceivable reason.
I have upvoted the same absolutely basic suggestion dozens of times on every incarnation of this feedback system for almost two years. Why is this getting ignored? This is an absolute basic requirement for OneDrive's compatibility with Sharepoint.
