We’ve identified and fixed several issues that caused high CPU on macOS devices. We have additional work planned to make improvements in this area.

This has been driving me nuts too (I'm running Mojave), although it shows up now as the Finder pegging above 100% CPU usage, but when I pause OneDrive syncing, it settles down to where it should be. Like others have noted, it runs the CPU (and hence the fans) like crazy even if it's saying everything is up to date and hence (to my mind) should be doing almost nothing. But if I have sync on, it will run 100% CPU all day, which I know can't be good for the computer, and plus it runs down the battery, is noisy, and keeps the computer very hot.
If I go to OneDrive preferences and turn off Files On Demand, that also seems to quiet things down, but that it hardly seems like an adequate fix.
